Bonten Tate

The young people of Nakajima ward participate in this brave event. They jump into the extremely cold January sea in order to put their “Bonten” in the water, which is the word for a 5 meter-long bamboo with money on the end of it. On the coast, people chant Buddhist sutras and pray for bountiful farming and fishing.
