【The 2019 festival date is TBA.】
This festival is held annually in mid-August by the Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Koto, Tokyo. The festival is held every year, but the big, main festival is only every three years. Spectators throw water at the portable mikoshi shrine carriers, giving the festival the nickname, the “Water Throwing Festival”. People are drenched in showers from buckets as well as water from fire hydrants. This energetic festival embodies summer in Japan.
