Ikuji Firewalking Festival is the festival of Niiharu Shrine. It originated from a legend of a fishing boat trapped in a storm, but just before all was lost, it was saved by the spirit light of a sacred flame. On the evening of October 26, approximately 400 torches of all sizes are spread all over the precincts of the shrine. Men who have had an “unlucky” year (called Yakudoshi) run through the lit torches while carrying a miniature shrine on their shoulders. The festival is from around 7pm on October 26 to 12:30am. The tradition of running through the torches is the last 30 minutes of the festival, from 0:00 to 0:30.
