This is the big Spring festival for Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine, which was the shrine of the Tokugawa clan who ruled Japan continuously from 1603 to 1868. This 2-day festival is held every year on May 17 and 18, and features a variety of traditional events, rituals, and parades. The main event on May 17th is a display of horseback archery called Yabusame. The second day is known for its famous samurai procession that features close to 1,200 participants. Starting at 11am, participants dress as warriors in samurai armor and escort mikoshi (portable shrines) to a hall in the shrine grounds. The authentic armor and weapons along with the scale of the event truly recreate what the Shogun’s army must have looked like.
