OniOiShiki (Ceremony of Driving Out Evil Spirits)


Yakushiji Temple’s “Flower Ceremony” is observed annually between March 25 and 31. The people of Nara associate the celebrations with the arrival of Spring. Events include taiko drumming, noh theatre, and children’s parades. The ceremony of Oni Oi Shiki takes place on the evening of March 31. Bishamon, the god of war, chases and banishes a colorful band of fire-bearing demons.
