Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi Festival

From to 09:00

100 people work together to carry Japan’s biggest Waraji (straw sandal), which is 12 meters in length, 1.4 meters wide, and weighs 2 tons. In a procession that also includes traditional dances and music, the participants walk through the city of Fukushima and then end with a dedication to Haguro shrine. The ritual serves to pray for grain richness, domestic safety, and body robustness, among other things. The symbology of the sandal is to give us strong and sturdy legs; it is also said to be the god of marriage.
